I’ve always found ferns to be fascinating and beautiful. When my mum moved back from Kenya in the late 80’s one of the first house plants she bought was Fred the fern. He’s still going strong.
I remember being show fern fossils on a visit to Northumberland and as our guide told the story of them, and the landscape around us as we stood by a stream upon the moors, the penny dropping about how our ancient earth was full of ferns, and it was to a large extent these early plants that slowly became the fossil fuels we use today in countless ways.
I also wonder how releasing all the carbon back into the atmosphere will affect future generations of organisms, and whether the ferns with far outlive our species… who knows.
